How do we seduce the people of Leuven to switch to green energy?

How can you see the forest through the trees of green energy contracts? And isn’t green energy always more expensive?

To answer these questions, Leuven 2030 and Pricewise collaborate to develop an energy tool. This tool searches the best and cheapest solution for you, based on your energy use. Together with Shaved Monkey, Leuven 2030 starts a campaign to make the people of Leuven familiar with the tool.

When do you make the switch?

At the request of Shaved Monkey, twelve well-known inhabitants of Leuven agree to join forces as ambassadors for this project. They share a passion for their city and and the belief that renewable power sources are the future. Among others Jan Hautekiet, Imke Courtois and Louis Tobback announce their switch to green energy.

Together these ambassadors give a powerful signal: we make the switch! What about you?

Every ambassador receives a short personalized video to share on Facebook. Everybody who shares their switch on social media has a chance at winning prices, and they become new ambassadors. This way the campaign creates expanding waves on social media. Thanks to this strategy with a focus on digital marketing, the campaign reaches a lot of people. But Leuven Switches also uses old school ways of communication: every person in Leuven gets a letter in their mailbox. At Cinema Zed, movie lovers get to see a commercial.

The campaign is a success. Already more than 727 inhabitants made the switch, and this number is still rising. On average they have saved €168 on their energy bill. Everything combined, about 275 ton CO2 was saved. The energy tool is frequently visited and used. This way, Leuven is taking big steps towards being a climate-neutral city by 2030.
